HOTSPUR CUP OF CHEERS

Saturday 6th October 1430 Huws Gray League Cup, Quarter Final

Darren Garmey’s Holyhead Hotspur side may prop up the Huws Gray Alliance league table at present but when it comes to the League Cup competition they come alive and on Saturday reached the semi final after taking care of Ruthin Town who are a good outfit as was Flint Town United who Hotspur beat in the previous round at their own ground.
As a delighted manager Garmey said after ‘we won the game with two goals in the first fifteen minutes and although pegged back a couple of times managed the whole game well’ to set up a real cracking semi final against Bangor City February 9th 2019.
The Ruthin result could turn out to be a big one in Hotspur’s season and must give the players renewed confidence as they begin to move out of the league’s basement hopefully beginning this coming weekend when we host Buckley Town kick off 2.30pm, and in which new striker Marc ‘logs’ Evans may feature on his return to Anglesey and the Holy islanders from New Zealand.
Hotspur quickly on the front foot and in the first minute with the wind at their backs a Dean Garmey cross was headed just over by Caio Hywel. The hosts continued to press and were rewarded as early as the fifth minute when John Littlemore turned his defender superbly and set up Mel Mc Ginness with a fine ball who ran into space behind the defence and slotted around keeper Richard Parry and into the far corner for a fine goal. The game was being played at a good tempo as the visitors tried to get back in the match. However in the 13th minute they were to be stunned even further when a long throw from Dan Mc Ginniss on the right saw Luke Mc Givern rise highest and his header looped over Parry and into the far corner.
Hotspur were putting some good moves together although the shocked visitors were now beginning to show their mettle but Tom Williams in a good position shot straight at Hotspur keeper Carl Jones after finding space on the left.
Just after the half hour the hosts let Ruthin back into the match following a needless goal. Hotspur custodian Carl Jones dithered and dallied with the ball at his feet which invited Llyr Morris in to dispossess him and poke the ball home which barely trickled ever over the line. The north east Wales side confidence was now high and just after Kevin Evans found Morris whose fierce shot was deflected for a corner.
However what proved to be the decisive goal of the game came to Hotspur on 41 minutes when John Littlemore entered the box at pace to chase a through ball and Parry racing out of goal mistimed his dive a brought Littlemore down for a clear penalty, although hotly disputed by Ruthin Town. Kenleigh Owen made no mistake in slotting the ball home to make it half time 3 -1.
In the second half Ruthin Town had the wind to their backs and the deep lying Hotspur defence had their work cut out. Hotspur’s defence was resolute and closed down their opponents well although Gwion Owen was twice close as the game drew to a close. On 80 minutes Ruthin were awarded a penalty after Dean Garmey was penalized for a somewhat innocuous offence and Llyr Morris made no mistake from the spot kick. Ruthin pressed hard to take the match into extra time but Hotspur held firm.
