QUICK FIRE SECOND HALF TREBLE SINKS HOTSPUR!
By BARRY ROBERTS
Holyhead Hotspur v Airbus UK Broughton Saturday 30 th March 2019
At one down at the break to the new Huws Gray Alliance league champions
Airbus UK Broughton Darren Garmey’s Holyhead Hotspur side were still in the
game. However barely eight minutes into the second half they trailed 0 – 4 which
effectively killed off any hopes they might have had of adding to the two
encouraging recent wins against Rhyl and Denbigh Town which had boosted
hoped they could survive and avoid the drop. It is still up in the air (forgive the
pun!) who goes down and who comes up re the new FAW Championship North.
While it was a disappointing dress rehersal for the League Cup final at Conway on
Easter Saturday 20 th April it is hoped that Hotspur will offer stiffer opposition to
the ‘wingmakers’ in that important match.
Hotspur have three remaining league games at Ruthin Town this coming Saturday
April 6 th with a return against the same opponents the following Saturday at home
and finally to end the 2018/19 campaign at Holywell Town on Saturday 27 th April
with the League Cup on the 20 th sandwiched in between.
After a good start Hotspur fell away in the first half against Airbus which saw the
visitors go ahead via Nathan Woolfe just after the half hour. Some indecision from
assistant referee Will Peel let the visitors snatch a soft second goal from Hart
which seemed to demoralize the hosts and were quickly followed by goals from
Ryan Edwards and Lewis Buckley and all this within eight minutes of the restart!.
There after the visitors could easily have doubled their tally but Carl Jones in te
Hotspur goal made a number of smart stops while the hosts battled hard to
reduce the arrears but were well beaten at the end.
Nip and tuck at the start and Mike Kelly’s snap shot effort was saved by the Airbus
keeper while at the other end Carl Jones was alert to foil the visitors. Mel Mc
Ginniss made a good turn and shot at keeper Dave Roberts on the half hour,
however the ‘high flyers’ were beginning to dominate proceedings and on 33
‘took off’. The ball was played into the goal mouth via a deflection and found
Nathan Woolfe who was ‘prowling’ inside the box and he slotted an easy chance
home. Half Time 0 -1.
Some poor decisions by the officials saw the visitors take advantage 3 minutes
into the half when the ball was crossed from the right and Sam Hart was quickest
to react bundling the ball home from short range in a crowded goalmouth. The
goal seemed to shake the hosts and two minutes later it was 0 -3 as Ryan Edwards
broke through far too easily through the Hotspur defence to fire past Carl Jones
and on 53 a similar situation saw game, set and match when Lewis Buckley had a
clear run on goal to fire home number 4 past a shell shocked home rearguard.
On 57 Mel Mc Ginniss in the clear but shot wide of goal with Tomos Clarke on goal
looking for the pass. Airbus were always threatening to add more goals to their
tally but Carl Jones doing his bit by denying them any more goals. Making some
fine saves and especially one from Asa Hamilton which was outstanding.
There was a minutes silence before the match to remember a Holyhead
footballing legend Tommy Welsh.
