Ruthin Town v Holyhead Hotspur Saturday 6 th April, 2019
If Holyhead Hotspur do eventually get relegated (and there are still enough permutations to sort out before that is cut and dried) they will have certainly gone down fighting of late as this excellent three points at Ruthin Town was their third win in four outings, not bad for a supposedly down and out side. Although the league table never lies it has to be said that on this form they are better than their league position indicates the drawback being it’s so late in the day! The Ruthin Town success brought out a real unlikely hat trick hero in defender come mid fielder notching a fine hat trick with proven predator Mel Mc Ginniss adding the other. Clarke put the Holy islanders in front after just four minutes via a free kick and although the north east Wales hosts hit back in the first half with two set piece free kicks from Ifan Hughes and Ryan Jones, Tomos Clarke with a fine curling effort put Hotspur level soon after the break. Mel Mc Ginniss put his side ahead barely five minutes later in a goalmouth scramble and with twelve minutes left the visitors who were the better outfit in the second half sealed the win with a composed Clarke finish which chalked up his hat trick. This was Darren Garmey’s side third success over the Memorial Fields team this season with wins against them in the League Cup and the Welsh Cup and can it possibly be four this coming week end when we entertain Ruthin Town in the final Huws Gray league home match of the season, with an away fixture at Holywell Town on the 27 th and a week before on the 20 th at Conwy the final of the Huws Gray League Cup against league champions Airbus UK Broughton. After Tomos Clarke had given Hotsput the lead after 4 minutes via a free kick it was the hosts who looked lively switching play frequently and on eight minutes were awarded a free kick just outside the box from which Ifan Hughes fired a superb effort into the far right hand corner beyond Carl Jones in the Hotspur goal. Just after Jones made a great save with a similar effort from the hosts.
The match was now end to end and Mel Mc Ginniss in on goal but Ryan Goldstone made a fine stop with his feet which Tomos Clarke heading the rebound just wide on 21. However three minutes later the hosts went ahead when a free kick by Ryan Jones from 20 yards beat Carl Jones although he did get a hand to it but the shot was too strong for him to save. Hotspur though were always a threat on the break Half Time 2 – 1. Holyhead Hotspur on the front foot straight away and Mel Mc Ginniss a menace to the home defence nearly scored, but on 48 Hotspur drew level with Tomos Clarke’s left footed curler flying past the home keeper. Barely five minutes later the resurgent Hotspur side went ahead when from a corner on the left by Dean Garmey was scrambled home in a goal mouth melee. End to end and Ruthin trying to get back in the game but Hotspur in no mood to relent and on 78 it was game set and match when a fine long searching ball by Dan Mc Ginniss found Clarke on the left who chested the ball down and showing fine composure slotted the ball home past the home keeper.
