Sat 17 Nov 14:30 - Huws Gray Alliance League - Huws Gray Alliance Full time

Penrhyncoch v Holyhead Hotspur Saturday 17th November, 2018

A point and a clean sheet and no bookings away from home is always a good result but with Holyhead Hotspur’s precarious position at the foot of the Huws Gray Alliance league table manager Darren Garmey will have mixed feelings as against mid Wales Penrhyncoch his visiting Holy Islanders put up a resilient display and perhaps could and should have come home with all three points in a tight encounter with neither side able to get on the score sheet.
Hotspur came close to bagging an important win on a number of occasions but will take the point and hope for all three when visiting fellow league strugglers Denbigh Town this coming Friday night with a 7.30pm kick off.
Garmey’s men have showed in their 100% record cup record in two competitions so far this season that they are a far better outfit than the league table shows at present, but they need to put some wins together as only one league win so far needs to be improved on. However they are quite capable but as in this latest result it should have been all three.
Hotspur first to get out of the blocks with some quick tempo and on 7 minutes a corner by Dean Garmey on the right was headed just over by Mel Mc Guinniss. The visitors were taking control of the mid field and on twelve a 20 yard free kick by Marc Evans struck the post as Hotspur continued to hold sway. However at the other end a long distance punt by Pen’s Lian Lewis just skimmed the post. Both teams had their moments before the break

Half Time 0 -0.

Just after half time a fine ball by Cory Jones was played to Dan McGuinniss but the effort ca\me to nothing. Hotspur continued to look the more likely to break the stalemate and on 50 a corner on the left by Dean Garmey was glanced just wide.
A two footed dangerous tackle on Garmey by Luke Sherbon was given a yellow instead of a red by the lenient referee.
Hotspur continued to dominate play especially mid field and should have been in front, although there was always the chance the home side could break quickly as the hosts started to put something together and pressurized the Hotspur defence late on but Hotspur’s bck line were holding out with some resolute defending.
With seven minutes to go Pen’s striker Steffan Davies was given a straight red after manhandling Carl Jones. Just after Alex Jones produced some superb defending to affert a dangerous situation.
Before the end Tomos Carek with an over head kick and a Dan McGuinniss curler went close but the deadlock was not broken and it had to be just a point to take home but not for the want of trying!.

Gareth M Davies.
